Taylor - Al - 1892

A bloody and beastly fight occurred last evening at the Lutz dive north of Sperry’s Bridge, which may cause the death of Al Taylor, a well known citizen of this county. Taylor was at the Lutz place when five of the Patton boys of near New Richmond drove up. It is said the whole crowd had been drinking and it is certain that they became involved in a quarrel before they had been together five minutes. Hot words grew hotter and finally a few stones were thrown. The Pattons started off and Taylor fired a whole basketful in their direction. Immediately they turned back and gathering up stones as they came on charged Taylor with the fury of demons. When in close quarters, they opened up on him and fairly rained their missiles upon his head and body. Taylor tried to defend himself but soon dropped insensible covered with blood and to all appearances a corpse. The Pattons continued to thump him on the head with stones until his head resembled a bloody sponge. They finally departed and friends picked Taylor up, washed his wounds and carried him to his home. His condition is reported as very serious and fears for his recovery are entertained. The Pattons have not been arrested, but the case will go to the grand jury for action.
