Information was received in this city last night of the death of Charley Taylor, a veteran conductor on the Vandalia, and well known to many in this city. Mr. Taylor was coming north with his train, a through freight, and near Catlin he attempted to pass from a coal car to a box car when he made a misstep and fell on the track, having both legs severed and receiving other injuries which caused his death before he could be taken back to Terre Haute. Immediately after the accident occurred the train was stopped and side tracked and the unfortunate man placed in the caboose and started for Terre Haute for medical aid, but the injuries were such that nothing could be done to save him. Mr. Taylor for anumber of years was in charge of the construction train and made headquarters in this city. He was the oldest conductor on the road and had the respect of the officials and employees of the road and of all who knew him. -- typed by kbz
