Tague - Fern

Fern TAGUE, the genial proprietor of the Waveland's Uptown
Café was born a native of Parke County, the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Tague, who lived on a farm near Byron. Along
with her five sisters and three brothers, she attended grade
school at Byron and later high school in Waveland. Fern's early
life followed the pattern set by millions of other young ladies
who have grown up on farms and shared in the endless tasks and
chores which necessarily accompany farm life. It was then, quite
a change to move from the rural scene to the bustling city of
Indianapolis following the marriage to Bert Phillips in 1941. The
marriage proved unsuccessful and for several years Fern operated
a beauty shop in Indianpolis after graduating from the Rainbow
						  School of Beauty Culture.
Coming to Waveland in 1943, she and her brother Pat began
operating a restaurant in conjunction with the Marathon Service
station on St. Rd. 47. Later, they bought the Uptown Café
from John Reynolds, operating it successfully until they decided
to enter the restaurant business in Crawfordsville. After a short
time in the new venture, Fern decided she preferred to be in
Waveland and repurchased the Uptown Café which she still
operates. The restaurant business like so many other small
businesses is confining and does not allow its owner too many
free hours a day. That may account for the fact that Fern has no
special hobbies unless tramping through the woods picking berries
or hunting mushrooms can be accurately described as hobbies. Fern
did mention something about a fondness for gardening but admitted
under cross-examination that her efforts in this respect almost
always went down to defeat before an onslaught of weeds. - transcribed by kbz
