Swindler - William - 1893

Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal Saturday 2 Sept 1893

Wm Swindler, one of the oldest citizens of this county, died quite suddenly this morning of paralysis at his home in Ladoga. The deceased formerly resided in this city on College Street and his many friends here will be pained to learn of his death. He was a fine old gentleman, respected by all who knew him. He leaves one son, H. H. Swindler, of New Market.

William Swindler was born in Shelby county, Kentucky, July 25, 1815, and died in Ladoga, September 1, 1893.  He lived to the ripe old age of 78 years, one month and seven days.  In the spring of 1830 he moved with his widowed mother to Brown township.  After a short time he went to Crawfordville and learned the carpenter's trade with Eph Griffith.  At the age of 22 years he was married to America Beatty.  They commenced the hardships of pioneer life on a 160 acre farm in Scott township, which he had purchased from his mother.  In 1843 his wife died and he afterward married Margaret (Hughes) Redenbaugh.  In 1872 he was left alone for the second time.  He afterwards married Susanna (Benson) Himer, who still survives him.  Mr. Swinder united with the United Brethren church while quite a young man and lived in the faith of that church until death.  He was the father of six children, all of whom are deceased but one, Henry H., who resides on the old homestead in Scott township.  The funeral occurred at the residence on Sunday morning conducted by Rev. Wm. Harshbarger, who used for a text, Luke 23 28, "Weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.'  He was laid to rest with his family in the cemetery on the Terre Haute road.  Thus passes away one of the pioneers that battled with all the hardships of the early days of the settling of this county. – thanks so much to Kim H
