Swear, Charles - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

Charles Swear, an aged German farmer of New Richmond, was killed in a remarkable manner on Saturday afternoon.  He was returning home from this city on horseback, when near the Charles Fullen farm, northwest of the city, he stopped his horse, dropping the reins to light his pipe.  The horse became frightened and started, Mr. Swear caught up the reins sharply and the horse reared up and fell backwards, the unfortunate man beneath him.  Mr. Swear was horribly mangled in the stomach and also suffered the fracture of some ribs. He lived only a few minutes. Deputy Coroner Russell held an inquest and brought in a verdict of accidental death, in accordance with the facts given above.  Mr. Swear was one of the wealthiest farmers of New Richmond, owning over 400 acres of land in one body at that point.  He was universally esteemed by his neighbors. – kz
