Uncle Joe was a good citizen, a kind father and a Christian, one who lived his religion every day. He was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1829 and departed this life January 18, 1895, aged 65 years. He was married to Hettie Stevens for his first wife. To them was born two sons and two daughters. The boys are William and John, the girls Sarah and May. He had no fear of death. He said he was only waiting for the Lord to call him home. When they told him his daughter was dead he said he wished he could go too, so they could be buried together. His wish was granted. He united with the Old Baptist Church at Newtown a good many years ago. He had also been ordained a preacher of that faith for several years. He has always been a faithful member to his church.

It was a sad sight to see two hearses at the same house. Their funerals were preached by Elder John Miller, of Waynetown, on last Sunday at Big Shawnee Church, two miles west of Newtown. Their remains were laid at rest in the cemetery close to the church. The pall bearers were Daniel Hauk, Ralph Vancleave, Irvin Hutchison, Jont Vancleave, John Miller and Allen Moore. The bereaved wife and children have the sympathy of the entire community.
