Mrs. Mary Ann Surface, wife of Thomas Surface and daughter of Aaron Faust, was born Aug. 29, 1831, and died at her late home in Vermilion County, Ill., Aug. 23, at the mature age of nearly 65 years. Her remains were brought to Crawfordsville Monday on the Big Four at 1:15 p.m. and taken to Otterbein Chapel where the funeral services were conducted by the Rev. S. M. Hayes from the touching theme in St. John 5:25, a fitting thought for her long life of devout Christian service; and should be a source of lasting consolation to her bereaved husband and her sons and daughters, all of whom speak with reverence the sacred word “mother.”
Life is a mystery. Death is sad at any age—anywhere. Sometime with “his sickle keen” he cuts down his victims in the morning, sometimes at high noon, and sometimes in the evening of life, but always, surely. Yet we are better prepared to see well matured and ripened fruit drop from its place back to mother earth and the spirit t Him who gave it, than to see the little buds of promise carried away when just blossoming into cherished hopes.
All, therefore, may well rejoice that his consistent Christian, devoted wife, loving mother and beloved neighbor died in the faith that sustained her through so many years of busy life. -s
