Sullivan - Dan

Yesterday evening, between six and seven o’clock, Dan Sullivan – a boy about 16 years old – undertook to swim across Sperry’s mill pond with his little brother, and when about 80’ from the shore, sank. His little brother not being able to swim would probably have also drowned, as help was not near enough to render them immediate assistance, if the drowning boy had not seized him by the ankles and held him at arms length above his head as long as strength remained sufficient for him to do so. Hen then relaxed his hold and the little boy also sank, but help was so near that he was easily secured and brought to shore. The water was about 8’ deep where Dan sank. But, as there was a delay of about half an hour before his body could be recovered, all attempts at resuscitation availed nothing. - kz

Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Saturday, 13 June 1874
A boy named Dan Sullivan, aged about sixteen years, a son of Jerry Sullivan,
living in the northwest part of the city, was drowned while bathing in Sugar
Creek near the dam last Monday evening. He and his brother, Mart were playing
in the creek, when Mart became frightened and was about to sink. In his efforts
to save his brother, who could not swim, Dan was himself drawn under. He was
rescued from the water in a short time and taken home. Dan was a pretty fair
swimmer, but being embarrassed by the movements of his brother, and probably
becoming frightened; he lost control of himself and went down. He was an
industrious and hardworking boy. His brother, Mart, who came so near sharing
his fate, is one of the best of the Journal
newsboys, selling from forty to sixty copies of the paper every week. -s
