H.F. Johnson returned from Leadville, Colorado on
Saturday. He was called there by an accident to Andrew Sutton, a brother
of Mrs. Eliza Jarvis. Mr. Sutton is employed as Supt of timbering in
the D&H Mine. On the day of the accident he was inspecting the work
1100 feet under ground. One of the men had just pointed out a spot that
needed support, when the rock fell, burying Mr. Sutton. Although
painfully injured, he retained consciousness and directed the men how to
get him out. After two hours work he was taken out and removed to the
hospital where it was found that his right ankle, left thigh bone and
two ribs were broken, his right lung punctured and skull fractured. The
physicians wanted to amputate the left leg but Mr. Sutton refused
preferring to die a whole man. He rallied finely for a few days, until
the injured lung began to fill up at which time the physicians had grave
fears and wired the relatives here. When Mr. Johnson left Leadville,
however, the patient was doing well all things considered and it thought
that he will make a good recovery providing pneumonia does not set in. - transcribed by kbz
