Stuart, Thomas Arthur - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

Thomas Arthur Stuart, the well known attorney, dropped dead this morning at half past six o’clock of heart failure. His death was wholly unexpected.

The many friends of Mr. Stuart in Crawfordsville will be shocked upon hearing of his death. Mr. Stuart has been well known here for years, he having been a student at Wabash College in the class of ’73. he transacted much legal business in the Montgomery circuit court and is particularly well known by his connection with the famous Pettit murder case, he appearing for the defense. He was an indefatigable laborer in the condemned preacher’s behalf and believed in his innocence. He has been working very hard on the appeal and his death is the worst thing that could have befallen Pettit as he was possessed of so many facts and figures which are now lost. He is the third lawyer connected with the case to die, Col. Wilson and Judge Davidson being the others. Mr. Stuart was a gentleman and a lawyer of great brilliancy. His death will be sincerely mourned by all who knew him..
