Dr. Walter Lee STRAUGHAN, 86, a 3-generation physician and former medical director of the Ben Hur Life Association died at 4:22 a.m. Friday at Culver Hospital following a prolonged illness. His residence was at 520 E. Main Street, Crawfordsville. The son of Dr. Kent E. Straughan and Lucy Bridges Straughan was born Feb 4, 1879, at the home of his grandafther, Dr. JW Straughan west of Parkersburg. His early childhood was spent in Browns Valley and when he was 9 his parents retired in Waveland where he was graduated from the high school in 1898. Dr. Straughan attended Indiana Medical College, Indianapolis. After completing his education in 1902, he married Nellie Kritz, who preceded him in death Oct 1953. Three children were born to this union, two of them dying in infancy, a son, Kenneth Paul and a daguhter, Alice Lee. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Mrs. Harry Chenault. Dr. Straughan came to Crawfordsville as assistant medical director of the Ben Hur Life Association in June of 1919 and at the death of Dr. JF Davidson in 1934 he was appointed medical director and served in that capacity until his retirement in December, 1950. He continued his medical pracdtice until July 1963 when failing health caused him to become less active, although many of his old friends continued to seek his advice. Dr. Straughan was a membe rof the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church Waveland Masonic Lodge NO 300 and received his Grand Lodge award and gold pin in 1953. He also was a member of Athens Cahpter No. 97, Order of Eastern Star, Crawfordsville, Scottish Rite and Murat Temple Shrine in Indianapolis and the Waveland Conservation Club. Dr. Straughan was a member of the Montgomery County Medical Society and was on the courtesy staff of Culver Hospital. He received his certificate of distinction for 50 years in the practice of medicine from the Indiana Medical Association Oct 31, 1952. Survivors include a sister, MRs. Oscar l. Cook of Waveland; a daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Patterson of Crawofrdsville and several cousins. Services were held 2 pm. Sunday at Machledt & Servies Mortuary at Waveland in charge of Rev. Lester NIles. Burial in Family plot at Maple Ridge Cetmety where Maosnic graveside rites were conducted. - transcribed by kbz
