WINGATE — Gordon Neal Stockdale, 64, Wingate, who retired about four years ago after serving as the Wingate postmaster for 36 years, died Sunday in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Lafayette, where he had been a patient for five weeks. He was graduated from Wingate High School and Lafayette Business College and held memberships in Wingate Masonic Lodge 633, Pleasant Hill United Church of Christ and National League of Postmasters. Born Feb. 16, 1913, near Wingate, he was a son of William Henry and Mary Arilla Neal Stockdale. He was married in May 1959 to Marie Roche of Crawfordsville. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Fred of Wingate; three stepsons, Thomas Roche and Jack Roche of Crawfordsville and Patrick Roche of Wheaton, Ill.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Nancy Faust and Mrs. Katherine Richardson of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Rochelle Hankinson of Brookfield, Wis.; a brother, Walter of Durand, Ill.; three sisters, Edith Foley of Wingate, Mrs. Oneta Walsh of Chicago and Mrs. Opal Yetter of Indianapolis; two grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Thomas Funeral Home at Waynetown with the Rev. Robert Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Hillsboro. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
