On Wednesday morning about 8 o'clock Jeremiah Stilwell, another of our old pioneers, one of the landmarks of the days gone by, peacefully folded his hands in death and passed away. He had only been confined to the house a few weeks but after he took down slowly weakened and died. Jeremiah Stilwell was born in Shelby County, Kentucky July 14, 1796, and of recent years has made his home with his son Stephen in this city. He died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Conners in this city. About 1826 he entered 120 acres of land about 7 miles south of Crawfordsville where he lived until a couple of years after his wife's death which occured May 8, 1870. He was a member of the Old Baptist Church and a regular attendant of the church's services. He prided himself upon being an old citizen. In his youth he carried the surveyor's chain and helped lay out most of the early roads of the county. When he first came here there was but one house and the land office where Crawfordsville now stands. In early life he was a staunch Whig, but of late years was an earnest Republican and was remarkably well posted in the politics and business interests of the county. He leaves several children, all long since of grown estate, to whom he left the priceless legacy of a good name and an unsullied reputation
