Carl Starnes, 80, of Crawfordsville, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday in his home. Mr. Starnes had taught speech and English in Fountain, Montgomery and Putnam Counties. He also worked with the State Highway Department at Crawfordsville and was the state highway safety director at Indianapolis. He retired form the Indiana office of occupational development. He was a member of Freedom Christian Church at Wallace, Wallace Masonic Lodge, a Republican precinct committeeman for several years and operated the Starnes Insurance Agency for 40 years in Fountain and Montgomer Counties. He was a 1934 grad. of WHS and a 1938 graduate of Wabash. Mr. Starnes was born April 4, 1916 at Wallace to Faris and Susie Sanders Starnes. He married Katy Myers on Aug 12, 1939 at Wallace. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Phillip and Tim; a daughter, Sue Anne Gilroy; 9 grandch; and 3 great grandchildren
