Stafford - Elizabeth Rachel

Elizabeth Rachel Stafford, daughter of Rev. G. W. and Rachel Stafford, was born at the family residence in this city, May 8, 1863, and died January 16, 1900. She was dedicated to God in holy baptism by Rev. William Graham, Sept. 1, 1863, the same day on which her father left for the army to serve as chaplain of the 40th regiment, Indiana volunteer infantry.
She was practically an invalid from her birth, yet while her body was weak and infirm, she possessed a mind of sufficient strength to enable her to fully understand and comprehend all her wants, and to enjoy the family life and the society of her friends.
She always regarded herself as a member of the church of her father and mother, and often expressed a wish that she was able to attend the church services, which she was seldom permitted to do. She was very much attached to her mother and her friends and said to her father the day before her death, “I am going to my mother tonight.” She said to her father that she wanted to be taken into the parlor and placed where her mother was and that she wanted the good people to sing and the minister to pray. She was conscious to the last and recognized the friends about her. - s
