A number of our older residents will be interested in the following concerning a former teacher in our schools from the Indianapolis Star
"Miss Mary D. Stillwell, 70 years old, for more than 30 years a local resident, former principal of school no. 11 and no. 36, died Friday, April 19, at her home in Chicago. Miss Stillwell was a native of Crawfordsville, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stilwell, both of whom died several years ago. Survivors are 3 sisters, Mrs. George W. Benton and Mrs. James R. Smith, both of Orange, NJ and Mrs. Paul Thomas of Boston, Mass. Miss Stillwell had been in ill health two years but her death came unexpectedly, according to the message received. here. During the long period she served as principal of schools here, Miss Stillwell became widely known among teachers of the city and a large number of her former pupils are now Indianapolis citizens. " Miss Stillwell's parents lived in the house now occupied by Claude Smith. Her first teaching was in a subscription school at Dowden. Later she taught in the town schools.
