The remains of Reid Stewart were brought here
from Frankfort, yesterday afternoon and were laid to rest in the IOOF
Cemetery. For several years, he with his parents and brother and sister
made their home in Darlington. About 5 years ago shortly after the
father's death, the family moved to Frankfort. The following account
taken from the Frankfort Crescent-News of Tuesday morning shows in what
high esteem he was held.
Reid M. Stewart, 20 years old, died at the home
of his mother, 603 W. Walnut Street at 7:20 o'clock this morning as a
result of two days suffering with congestion of the brain. The young man
had been in failing health the past two years but his condition had not
been serious. He was overcome with the heat Friday after having
returned home from carrying his rural mail route. His condition
gradually became worse until Sunday morning, when he lapsed into
unconsciousness, from which he never fully rallied. Attending physicians
had abandoned hope for his recovery yesterday.
Reid Miller Stewart was
born in Frankfort, August 19, 1896. He had spent most of his life in this
city. He was a graduate of the local high school with the class of 1915.
Last winter he attended Purdue Unviersity but because of poor health,
was forced to leave school before the completion of the year. For the
past year he had been one of the most active members of the M.C. Club of
this city. His death is the first in the club since its organization.
Since his sickness, fellow club members had been at his bedside
continually ready to give any needed assistance. He was a member of the
Methodist Episcopal church and an active member of the YMC class of the
ME Sunday School. During this summer he had been employed as a rural
mail carrier. He successfully passed the civil service examination soon
after his graduation from the high school and took up the work upon his
return from Purdue. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Emma Stewart, his
brother, Noble F. Stewart, and one sister, Esther Stewart. The funeral
was held at the Methodist Church in Frankfort Thursday afternoon at 2
o'clock, Rev. GF Craig officiating. - transcribed by kbz
