Steward - Gertrude

Word was received here yesterday morning that Mrs. Gertrude Steward, better known here as the widow of Fred Stebbins, had fallen at her home in Hammond and broken her neck. She and her husband WH Steward were just starting to drive to Chicago. She stepped to the stairway to speak to someone in the basement, tripped and fell to the bottom breaking her neck and fracturing her skull. She was dead when assistance reached her. A funeral service will be held in Hammond on Friday. The funeral service here on Saturday afternoon will be at the Machledt Funeral Home. She was born in Waveland, 58 years ago and was the daughter of Joseph Hendrickson. Her sisters were Mrs. Elmer Dietrich; Mrs. Theodore Sharp; Mrs. Otho Sharp and Mrs. Henry Loudermill, of whom only Mrs. Dietrich survive. Her first husband, Fred Stebbins, died a number of years ago. He had charge of the hotel here for a time. There is one daughter, Mrs. Eugene Barklay, of Indianapolis. -- transcribed by kbz

The funeral of Mrs. Steward, whose death was noted last week was held at the Machledt Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon with Rev CN McBrayer in charge. Mrs. Lowell Spencer played instrumental selections before and after the sermon. The pall bearers were Hubert Loudermill; Ira Sharp; Albert Dale; Harry Evernham; Wilmer Sharp and Richard Johnson. The flowers were carried by Misses Doris Loudermill; Marlene MIller and Eunice Sharp; Mrs Noel McMorrow; Mrs. Ira Sharp; Mrs. India Sharp and Mrs. Hubert Loudermill. Burial at Maple Ridge Cemetery. Gertrude J., youngest child of Joseph and Amanda Hendrickson, was born in Waveland, Dec 6, 1879. Her mother having died at her birth, she was reared in the home of an elder sister, Mrs. Henry Loudermill. She was educated int he Waveland Public Schools, from which she graduated at thea ge of 17. on February 23, 1898 she wa sunited in marriage to Fred A. Stebbins, to which union was born one daughter, Frances Evelyn, who survives both parents. On April 29, 1939 she was united in marriage to Herman W. Steward of Hammond at which home she passed away on July 31, 1940. She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, WH Steward, her daughter, Mrs. Gene Barkley of Indianapolis, one grandson, Robert Barkley and a sister, Mrs. EC Dietrich of Anderson, besides several nieces and nephews. At an early age she confessed her fiath to Christ and united with the Methodist Church to which faith she remained a loyal follower until her death. Mrs. Steward was of a naturally sunny disposition, always able to find the silver lining in any clouds and spent her entire life in service to those she loved.

Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Steward, 60, who died yesterday after suffering a skull fracture in a fall down a flight of stairs to the basement of her home at 745 Truman street, Hammond, will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Burns chapel here. Rev. E. J. Mungovan will officiate. Burial will be in Waveland, Ind., from where the deceased moved to Hammond three years ago. The husband, Herman; a daughter, Mrs. H. E. Barkley of Indianapolis, and a sister, Mrs. E. C. Dietrich of Anderson survive.
