Guy Harvey (Pinky) Spruhan, one of West Virginia's best known sports figures and a native of Montgomery County died recently according to word received here Tuesday. Mr. Spruhan, who was born and reared in Waveland, died in a Roanoke, VA hospital of a lung ailment. He was 75. While attending Waveland HS, Mr. Spruhan gained acclaim as an outstanding all-around athlete. Mr. Spruhan who in recent years had resided in Salem, W VA had been associated with sports in Virginia for 53 years as coach at Virginia Military Institute, Roanoke College, Andrew Lewis HS and as commissioner of Southwest Virginia Football Officials Association. In addition to two sons, a daughter and two sisters, he is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Burrin of Waveland.

Guy Spruhan, who has had charge of athletics in the VA Military Institute, since his discharge from army service has been employed for the coming year. A lexington VA Special says: Virginia MIlitary Institute has chose GH Spruhan as coach in 3 of the major sports, football, basketball and baseball for the season of 1919-1920. Mr. Spruhan has been head coach at the institute since Jan 1 and has ably demonstrated his ability in that capcity, if the baseball and basketball teams he turned out can be used as a criterion. Coach Spruhan is a native of Waveland, ind and attended Ohio Univ and the Univ of Mississippi, at both of which he participated in football, basketball and baseball on the varsity teams. After his athletic career, he turned his ability to making athletes of others. In 1912 he went to Roanoke College as general athletic director and coached 5 years. During this period his basketball teams won 48 out of 60, his baseball teams 30 out of 49, and football 25 and tied 4 out of 4 games. While at Roanoke, Coach Spruhan also gave one hour a day to the Salem HS sports and made an even more remarkable record as Salem won 3 state high school championships in basketball and during his last year there also won the football championship.

Guy Spruhan, who came home last week from Salem, VA where he has been in charge of athletics at Roanoke College left on Tuesday to go to Camp Humphries near Washington DC. He has volunteered for service in the Civil Engineers.

Guy Spruhan says that soldier service is agreeing with him and he eats well and sleeps well. He is helping dig trenches 8' deep at Camp Humphries near Washington. -- died about the 12-14th of Jan 1966
