Beckville has suffered an irreparable loss on the 28th of last month in the death of Joseph Spohr, who died in Tama County, Iowa, where he had gone on a visit, in company with his wife, to see his children.
He was born on the 23d of November, 1805, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, and was married in August, 1830, and in the following month moved to this county, forty three years ago and bought of the United States government the land upon which he resided at the time of his death. He reared a large, respectable and intelligent family of children—three sons and seven daughters, nine of whom, and his widow, survive him. He settled in this county when it was almost an unbroken wilderness and by his indefatigable industry and economy accumulated a fortune, which he left equally to his family. He was prompt and punctual in all the business transactions of life. He lived and died an “honest man, the noblest work of God,” loved and respected by all who knew him. -s
