Hundreds of friend of Mary Helen Spilman, including many Crawfordsville HS Students gathered at the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon where they attended the funeral services for this popular teacher. For an hour preceding the service the remains lay in state at the church. The respect and esteem in which Miss Spilman was held by the school city was shown when the junior and senior high schools were dismissed Tuesday afternoon. For many years Miss Spilman had been a teacher in the history department at the junior high and prior to that time she had been identified with the grade schools of the city. The funeral sermon, preached by the Rev. Melvin V. Oggel, pastor of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church was a beautiful tribute to the deceased. Pall bearers for the service were Ramey Kostanzer, Harry Fine, W.N. Steele, John Binford, T.C. Crabbs and Prof. A.D. Montgomery. The flower bearers included Lilian Blair, Katherine Craig, Beatrice Caldwell, Della Dennis, Mary Mildred Schweitzer and Mrs. Harry Morrison. The burial was made in the Masonic Cemetery. - kbz
