She was born Dec 6, 1910 in Aldon, Iowa to Orlando G. and Ethel L. Hostetler Swanay. Wilma was the youngest of 4 children. Parents & sisters Naomi, Thelma and Irma are all deceased. She graduated from Waveland HS in 1929 and on Sept 19, 1930 married George McCormick Spencer who died on Nov 29, 1983. They had 4 children: Martha (Bill Leyda, Burlington, WI 2006) Mary (Tom) Moore, Crawfordsville Margaret A. Payne died Nov 6, 2001 and George (Judy) Spencer, Waveland. 8 grandchildren and 4 greats survive. Wilma was a homemaker and retired from Russellville Bank. She was a m ember of the Wabash Ave Presbyterian Church. If you ever noticed a small, impeccably dressed woman walking along Washington St during the late 80s or 90s often wearing a red cape and usually a hat, it was probably Wilma on her way to church or to volunteer at the Old jail Museum or Lane Place. Her candy-making from the 40s to 70s and tatting (lace making) skills, all her life are legendary. She created countless items for the Presbyterian Church Bazaar. Rather than flowers or cards, Wilma and the family would prefer a donation of your time or contribution to your favorite non-profit, school or charity. It was her choice to have a graveside service at the Maple Ridge Cemetery, Waveland for family & close friends at 1:00 pm. Saturday June 10. Re v. Velma Keesling will be officiating with funeral arrangements provided by Machledt & Servies Funeral Home, Waveland.
