Crawfordsville Weekly Journal January 2, 1873

John Speed, Ex-Mayor of this city, died of congestion of the lungs at the residence, on Walnut street, a little before 12 o'clock on yesterday.  He was born in Scotland in 1801, but came to this country when quite young and for more than twenty years has resided in this city.  Four years ago he was elected mayor of this city and served for two years.  His great leading characteristic was a stern honestly that no temptation could successfully assail.  He was well read in many branches of literature and was always an agreeable companion, imparting much information to those who associated with him.  He was a kind husband and father and will be greatly missed, not only by his relatives, but by a large circle of friends.  The funeral will take place from the residence.  He will be buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery.  All are invited to attend.

Note: Cemetery records list him buried in Masonic cemetery, not Odd Fellows.
