Charles A. Sommer, 87, father of Judge Howard A. Sommer, died at 3:30 p.m., Thursday in the Jay County Hospital at Portland. He had been in ill health for some time. Mr. Sommer, who lived at Salamonia, near Portland, had lived in Jay County all of his life and was a retired farmer. He and his wife, the former Ella E. Steurer, observed their 66th wedding anniversary on Dec. 28. They were married at her home in Jay County in 1899. Mr. Sommer was a member of the United Church of Christ at Salamonia and was a 50-year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Both Mr. and Mrs. Sommer had visited here frequently over the years. The survivors include the wife and six sons. The latter are Judge Sommer, Earl Sommer who lives near Portland but is employed in Ft. Recovery, Ohio; Clarence Sommer, professor of education in the graduate school of Xavier University in Cincinnati; Alva Sommer of Union City; Ivan Sommer of Columbus, Ohio, and Arlie Sommer of St. Mary's, Ohio. Other survivors include 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Williamson & Spencer Mortuary in Portland at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the family lot in the Salamonia Cemetery.
