Dan Snyder, 80-year-old resident of Hillsboro, native of Covington and a retired mason and plasterer, was killed instantly about 2:30 p. m. Saturday, Nov. 19, when struck by an auto on US-136, one mile east of its junction with US-41, south of Sterling. He had been hitch-hiking, according to Fountain County officials. Fountain County Sheriff George E. Cruea of Covington said his investigation indicated Snyder apparently walked out onto the highway to hail a friend in an oncoming truck when he was hit. He was hitch-hiking home from a visit with a daughter, Mrs. Esther Keeling, in Veedersburg. The elderly man was hit by a car driven by Mrs. Martha Wendall, wife of Orville Wendall, a Hillsboro barber. She was driving west, enroute to Covington with four other Hillsboro women, Mrs. Nellie Eitnier, Mrs. Rena Allen, Mrs. Rita Harshbarger and Mrs. Marian Rice. As the driver swerved in an effort to avoid striking the pedestrian, her car careened into a ditch along the road. Neither Mrs. Wendall nor her companions were injured. The victim's body was thrown on the hood of the car. He died of multiple fractures — skull, neck, legs and arms. Mr. Snyder was born in Covington, March 30, 1880, the son of William and Anna Bybee Snyder. He married Lola Clemens in February 1904, and she preceded him in death in September 1941. Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. LaVern Janeway of Muncie and Mrs. Keeling of Veedersburg; two brothers, Elsworth of Hillsboro and Arthur of Fremont, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Sterns of Indianapolis and Mrs. Sylvia Wilson of Delta, Colo.; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two daughters, Mrs. Edna Donovan and Mrs. Dorothy Delp. Funeral services were held at 11 a. m. Tuesday (EST) at the Crumley Funeral Home in Hillsboro. The Rev. Ronald Carlson officiated and burial was in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. --typed by Walt W
