As stated briefly in yesterday’s Journal, the venerable Cornelius Smock died yesterday afternoon of general debility. The funeral will occur tomorrow at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. E. B. Thomson.]
Cornelius Smock was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, January 16, 1800 of the Revolutionary stock. He was married to Elizabeth Adams in 1823 and in 1829 removed to Johnson County, Ind., later to Putnamville and in 1853 to Crawfordsville where he has since resided. He was the father of eight children, seven of whom survive, all female except Wm A. Smock of Indianapolis. Mr. Smock was a staunch Presbyterian since 1824, and has been an elder in Center Church since 1854. All of his children are members of the same church. In politics he was a Republican and since the organization of that party had been a firm believer in its doctrines. During his long residence here, he had the honor and respect of every person in the city and few men have died whose sterling worth and honesty have made them more regretted.
