Robert Gilliand
Smith, 50, 1001 Wayne Ave., was found dead in his car in the garage at his home
about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, and acting coroner Dr. J. M. Kirtley said he had taken
his own life by carbon monoxide from the motor exhaust. The sheriff’s
department said the body was found after Mrs. Margaret L. Smith, wife of the
deceased, returned to the house after being gone all day at work. With her were
a son and daughter. The body was slumped in the front seat of the car, the
motor of which was running. The physician said Smith had been dead several
hours. Born Nov. 5, 1914 in Montgomery County, he was a son of William and Anna
E. Lane Smith. He was married to Margaret Brown in 1935. He was a member of the
Whitesville Christian Church and Ladoga Masonic Lodge and was a graduate of
Crawfordsville High School. Survivors include the wife; a son, David Keith
Smith of this city; a daughter, Judith Ann Smith, at home; a sister, Mrs.
Lawrence Himes of Ladoga; two granddaughters and nieces and nephews. The body
was taken to the Noble Reeves Funeral Home at New Market, where arrangements
are incomplete. – jlr
