Smith - Mabel Thompson

Mrs. Mabel Elizabeth Smith, 61 of Waynetown, former Crawfordsville HS mathematics teacher died of a heart attack shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the home of her mother, Mrs. Otis Thompson, 1500 W. Main St. Mrs. Smith and her husband, V. Atwood Smith had been working in the garden at the Thompson home. Mrs. Smith had just entered the car prepatory to going home when she was stricken. The fire department resuscitator squad was rushed to the scene and a physician was called, but Mrs. Smith was pronounced dead. Mrs. Smith taught mathematics in Crawfordsville HS from 1929 through 1954. Her husband also was a school-teacher at Waynetown for many years. Born May 13, 1904, north of Crawfordsville, she was the daughter of Otis and Anna Wilson Thompson. She and Mrs. Smith were married August 7, 1935. Mrs. Smith was graduated from Crawfordsville HS in 1922. She attended Butler University and later was graduated from Indiana State Teachers College. She received her masters degree from Indiana University. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the American Association of University Women and the Pi Mu Research Club. The survivors include the husband; her mother; two sisters, Mrs. Alta Ottinger of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Dora Adams of Albuquerque, NM; a niece, Mrs. Rita Ann Coil of Middlebury, Ind and a nephew, Frank S. Stafford of Glendora, Calif. Friends may call at the Hunt & Son Funeral Home at a time to be announced later Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
