James W. Smith, about 45 years old, former resident of Crawfordsville, died at 4:50 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at his home in Indianapolis. He had been ill for several years with a complication of diseases. Mr. Smith was born in Montgomery county and lived in or around Crawfordsville until ten years ago. Among the survivors, in addition to the widow, are a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Stonebraker; two nieces, Mrs. Nellie Cunningham and Mrs. Hattie Peyton, a nephew, Minter Stonebraker, and a cousin, H.F. Harrell, all loving in this city. In addition another sister and brother live in Indianapolis. Funeral announcements has not been learned here Wednesday night. Crawfordsville Daily Journal, March 15, 1935 Smith Rites to Be Held Saturday The funeral of James W. Smith, a former resident of Crawfrodsville, who died at Indianapolis, Wednesday, March 13, will be conducted at the Conkle funeral home at Indianapolis at 10 o'clock Saturday, March 16. The service is in charge of the Rev. Jesse Towns. The remains will be brought to the Oak Hill cemetery, arriving new 12:30. A short service will be held at the grave with the Wichita Tribe of Red Men No. 199 in charge. The deceased was a member of the First baptist church, having united thirty years ago. He was the son of William and Malenda Smith, born November 18, 1870, and departed from this life at the age of 64 years, 3 months, and 23 days. He was preceded in death by a father, mother, one brother, Henry Smith, and one sister, Mrs. Harley Swindler. Those left to morn his departure are the wife Bertha Messick Smith, two sisters, Mrs. Almeda Gillis of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Elizabeth Stonebraker of Crawfordsville, four nephews and two nieces, several cousins and a host of friends. - thanks to Kim H
