Smith - Hildred Haas

Hildred Smith, 94, Crawfordsville and formerly of Lake Holiday and Waynetown, died at 1:25 a.m. Sunday in St. Clare Medical Center. Mrs. Smith retired as the Montgomery County treasurer where she served from 1971-1979. She served as deputy treasurer from 1959-71. She was instrumental in starting the county office holders retirement pension plan. She was a union stewart at Wilson Shirt Factory, was employed for Montgomery Ward and had been an accountant and contributing writer for the Journal Review. Her memberships included Alamo Order of Eastern Star 495 where she was a 50+ year member and past worthy matron; former officer of Indiana County Treasurers Association; past president of Waynetown PTA; past president of Business and Professional Women's Club where she earned "Woman of the Year;" past president of Montgomery County Republican Women's Club; and Lake Holiday Homeowners Association. She was a graduate of Waynetown High School.
She was born October 21, 1911 in Montgomery County, to Ira Elmer and Ruth ELlen Mitchell Haas. She married Doman Lee Smith March 19, 1933. He is deceased. Survivors include son Larry (Joan) Smith, Carmel; niece Barbara Eppert, Crawfordsville; three granddaughters and six great grandchildren. One brother, Austin L. Haas is deceased.
Funeral seravices scheduled 2 p.m. Thursday in Shoemaker Funeral Home, Waynetown with pastor David Low officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Waynetown United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be provided in the funeral home. - typed by kbz
