Smith - Henry

Whitesville, April 19 - Henry Smith, age 73, a life long resident of this community passed away at his home here this morning after a short illness of two days. Mr. Smith appeared to be in his usual health on Sunday, but while drawing kerosene from a tank in the back yard at his home he was stricken with a paralytic stroke from which he was not able to recover. Mr. Smith was one of the most highly respected citizens of this community. For twenty-five years he was connected with the Monon railroad. For the past seven years he has been custodian of the Whitesville school and was faithful in his service and never neglectful of his duty in the least detail. The deceased was born at New Richmond on September 2, 1853 and was the son of John and Harriett Smith. In 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Louise Thompson of this place, who died nine years later. To this union, four children were born, Mrs. Carrie Peffley, of Eugene, Ore., Earl Smith, New York City; Ed Smith, Lapland, all of whom survive, and Fred Smith who died in infancy. In 1891, Mr. Smith married Miss Emma Priest, also of Whitesville, who with two children survives, Mrs. E.E. Harrington, of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. George McDonald of New Ross. Mr. Smith is also survived by three brothers, Frank Smith, of Spokane, Wash,; James and Charles Smith of Crawfordsville, and five grandchildren. For forty years, Mr. Smith has been a faithful and devoted member of the Whitesville Christian church from where the funeral services will be held on Friday The hour of service will be announced as soon as work is received from distant relatives. - thanks to Kim H
