NORTH SALEM – Fred T. Smith, 83, of North Salem, died Thursday evening in Hendricks County Hospital at Danville. He had been in failing health for several years. He was a director of the North Salem State Bank where he had retired as a cashier in 1965 after 41 years of service. He also retired that same year from the insurance business he operated. Mr. Smith was a member of the North Salem United Methodist Church, past master of North Salem Masonic Lodge 142, past patron of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 276, Scottish Rite, life member of Murat Shrine, charter member and past president of the North Salem Lions Club, past secretary of the Hendricks County Shrine Club and 1910 graduate of North Salem High School. Born Dec. 13, 1892, in Boone County, he was a son of John M. and Onie Smith. He was married June 15, 1916, to Nina Duckworth at Danville. Surviving are the wife; a daughter, Dianne Neff of North, Salem; two grandchildren, Randy and Elaine Neff, both at home; and a sister, Mrs. Nell Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Porter Funeral Home with the Rev. Stoner Clark officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday. – jlr
