COVINGTON — Miss Carson Smith, 94, a retired school teacher and a resident until 1961 of this area, died at 4:10 p.m. Monday in Whispering Pines Nursing Home at Valparaiso, where she had been a patient 18 months. For the last 10 years she had made her home with a niece, Mrs. Ed (Alvena) Mockler of Valparaiso. Miss Carson was a graduate of Covington Normal and Indiana Normal and taught school several years at Bend, north of here, and the eighth grade for a number of years at Mellott. She was a member of Covington United Methodist Church and for 52 years of Troy Chapter 145, OES. A daughter of David L. and Sarah C. Jones Smith, she was born Sept. 28, 1876 near Covington in Troy Township. She was the last of several children. Surviving are six nephews, Hansel Smith of Wisconsin, Leonard Smith of Indianapolis, Ernest Smith of Carmel, W. Russell Smith of Covington, Gordon Smith of Kouts and Everett Smith of Valparaiso, and five nieces, Dorothy Smith of West Lafayette, Sarah Smith of Covington, Mrs. Hazel Fouts of Muncie and Helen Smith and Mrs. Alvena Mockler of Valparaiso. Funeral rites will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington, with Rev. Robert H. Miller officiating and burial in Bend Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday. --typed by Walt W
