Artie L. Smith, 69, died in his home, 206 S. Walnut Street, Wednesday (Jan 21, 1962) afternoon. A son of William H. and Emily Jane MacMullen Smith, he was born at Lapland Dec 20, 1891. He married in Indianapolis June 8, 1919 Lois M. Newhouse who survives. Mr. Smith had been retired since 1957 and suffered from a long illness. He was a Ladoga HS graduate. He and Mrs. Smith began housekeeping in Indianapolis. He worked as a salesman and alter farmed at Lapland. He lived the past six years in Crawfordsville. While in the area he was a member of the Parkersburg Christian Church serving as an elder, Sunday School superintendent and treasurer. He attended the First Christian Church in Crawfordsville and an honorary deacon at the time of his death. Mr. Smith also held office in the Scott Twp Farm Bureau and was a member of the advisory board. He was a WWI veteran, serving in the Eighth Division Transportation Corps and was a member of Barracks 1567 of WWI Veterans. Surviving besides the wife are a son, Richard A. Smith of Bellefountaine, Ohio; a daughter Mrs. Mary Lou Priebe of New Market; three sisters, Mrs. Sudie Brann and Mrs. Everett Layson of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Thurman Blaydes of near Ladoga and 8 grandchildren. A brother, Clarence, preceded him in death in 1939. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at the Bright Funeral Home with Rev. Paul E. Million officiating and interment in Masonic Cemetery.
