NEW RICHMOND— Russell Newton Smith, 73, died at 11:45 a.m. Friday in Elizabeth's Hospital at Lafayette. He had been in failing health several years and seriously ill two weeks. Born Oct. 30, 1890 in Etoile, Ky., he was a son of Thomas and Mary Clark Dougherty Hood. He was married Sept. 28, 1930 to Mildred Morris of New Richmond. They were married at the home of the bride. Mr. Smith was a World War I veteran, serving with the Army Corps of Engineers from 1917 to 1919. A resident of Glasgow, Ky., for a time, he moved to Lafayette and then to Cuba where he resided for 35 years. While in Cuba, he was employed by United Fruit Sugar Co., retiring as manager of the Preston Division at Oriente, Cuba. After his retirement, he moved to this community in 1955. He was a member of the Methodist Church here and Odd Fellows Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Country Club at Lafayette. Mr. Smith attended Lindsey Wilson Junior College and was a graduate of Asbury College. Survivors include his wife; two sons, M. L. of New Richmond and E. C. of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Rex of Bowling Green, Ky. and J. Garnett of Goshen; three sisters, Mrs. R. E. Dye of Bowling Green, Mrs. J. B. Lowe of Jackson, Mich., and Mrs. N. W. Maurer of St. Louis; a grandson, Mark of New Richmond; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dianne Smith of New Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Servies Funeral Home at Waynetown with Rev. Donald Wade and Rev. Harold Clark officiating. Interment will be in New Richmond Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Saturday.   --typed by Walt W
