Word was received in Windfall today of the death of a former resident, D. Putnam Smith, age 85, who had been away from that town for many years but had visited there many times since leaving and had kept in touch with a number of friends during the years. He was better known in Windfall as "Put" Smith a man who was a worker in the Christian Church there, giving much of his time to the sick and the shut-ins. Mr. Smith died Wednesday at the Christian Benevolent Home at San Gabriel, Cal and funeral services were held Friday with burial at Englewood, Cal. He had suffered a stroke Sept 14. Ten years ago, after being in California for some time, he entered the home at San Gabriel as an assistant. He was one of 8 children born to Nathan and Hannah Smith, Windfall pioneers and surviving of this family is one sister, Mrs. Luell Harkin Brown of Anderson. She was in San Jose, Calif visiting a son and was preparing to go to San Gabriel to visit her brother when she received word of his death. – kbz
