Mrs. Laura D. Sloan, wife of John J. Sloan, grocer, of this city, passed away at 11:30 o'clock Tuesday night at Culver Union hospital, where she had been taken Tuesday morning in a critical condition. Mrs. Sloan had been in failing health for two or three months but she had been alarmingly ill but for a short time. The attending physicians were puzzled to diagnose her ailment which seemed to be caused by an ulceration in her face. Mrs. Sloan was unconscious for a day before death came. Mrs. Sloan was one of the best beloved women of the city. She was the oldest daughter of the late David Divine and was born in Crawfordsville Sept. 22, 1855. She observed her 55th birthday anniversary in September of last year. Her father, a prominent contractor of this city, died 13 years a and her mother, who was Jennie Epperson before her marriage to Mr. Divine, has been dead about six years. Mrs. Sloan was married in 1878 to John Sloan, of this city. four children were born to them, two of whom survive. Mr. Sloan also survives. The children are Blanche, wife of Rome Williams, of Mishawaka, and David D. Sloan, a junior in Wabash college. The deceased children are Harry, the oldest child, who died aged seven months and Mary, a little girl, who died at about four years of age. Mrs. Sloan is survived by four sisters --- Mrs. Wallace Montgomery of Linden; Mrs. Harry Law, Crawfordsville; Mrs. Harry Davis, St. Louis, and Mrs. James Harding of Crawfordsville. Mrs. Sloan seemed to be improved in her condition last Friday when her daughter, who had been with her, returned to her home. Mrs. Sloan was a life long member of Center Presbyterian church. She was esteemed and highly respected by her scores of friends in this city. Funeral services will be held at her late residence, 708 West Wabash avenue, at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Walter Johnston, pastor of Center church. Mrs. Benjamin Crane and Mrs. Charles L.Thomas will sing. The pall bearers will be Paul Montgomery, Harry Montgomery, Isaac Montgomery, Warren Ayers, Charles N. McClamroch and Edwin M. Brown. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
