William SKAGGS was born March 13, 1830 and died at his home in Mace, Feb 7, 1908. The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia but his health had been failing for some time, the grip and nervous troubles having weakened his constitution. He leaves besides a wife and 5 children and 11 grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. Mr. Skaggs' marriage to Sarah A. David occurred Jan 4, 1852. This marriage was hallowed to them by the birth of 5 children. After his first wife's demise he and Miss Sarah Morris were united in marriage by Rev. Plunkett Oct 19, 1876. To this union were born no children so they gave their two orphan grandchildren a home. Mr. Skaggs was a man of affairs, having carried the mail from Linnsburg to Mace for 18 years. He was gifted with a rare stock of common sense and a far-reaching public spirit. Politically Mr. Skaggs was reared a Republican and through life endorsed the principles of that party. He also believed that only two great parties can survive and they are needed to maintain the balance necessary for the perpetuation of our republic. In religion he belonged to the Christian family having joined the Christian Church and lived a true and consistent member. He believed in the right to individual opinion and interpretation of the Scripture, guided by care and reverence. He recognized Jesus of Nazareth as a manifestation of the infinite Father, the revelation of the divine, the one by whom we are enabled to apprehend and know something. The Great Spirit is the author of all things, he could find no rest for a perturbed and ever questioning spirit but on the cooling shade that mantles the throne from which an everlasting Father rules the universe he has created: in the shadow of the Rock of Ages, he could find rest. The funeral was held in Methodist Church at Mace, conducted by Rev. Plunkett, his former minister and the remains laid to rest in Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Mace. A friend - typed by kbz-
