Reuben SMITH died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jackson  Hallett, on sunday aged 83 years. The body was taken to Rockville  for burial.

Reuben D. Smith who was a citizen of Rockville for nearly 70 years, died at the home of Jackson Hallet, near Wallace, Montgomery County, last Friday.  He was born in New York, 1 August 1815, just 83 years before his burial in Rockville, last Monday.  In l8l8, his father moved to Sullivan County and from there to Rockville in 1828.  Reuben was the second son of the family which was so well-known here.

(note form KZ -- this is incorrect, him being t he second son).  His older brother Simeon, age 89 resides a few miles west of town, his younger brother, Joseph age 81, resides 2 miles north.  The combined ages of the three being 253 years.  Simeon voted for Jackson, Reuben and Joseph for Van Buren and for every DEMOCRATIC candidate since.

Reuben D. Smith one of the oldest residen ts of Rockville, died last Fri. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jackson Hallett over Sugar Creek.  Mr. Smith has been in failing health for so me time death resulting from old age and general debility.  He was born in NY  Aug 1, 1815 and came to Indiana when 3 years old, stopping in Sullivan Co 10 years, coming thence to Parke, where he has since resided. His widow, aged 82 years with 3 sons and a daughter, survive him as well as two brothers, Joseph and Simeon.  Burial was at the Rockville Cemetery, Monday afternoon.

Source:  Rockville Republican Wed, 8-3-1898 -- The remains of Reuben Smith, an old time resident of Rockville, were brought here Monday for burial.  Decea sed would have been 83 years old on the day after his burial and had liv ed since boyhood in Rockville until two years ago when he went to Montgome ry County to live with his daughter, Mrs. Jackson Hallett, near Wallac e.  Death occurred from old age, Sunday, July 31.  Mr. Smith came to Rockville when a small boy from New York being a native of the same county as the late Squire Beadle.  The body was brought by SR Shular & Son, undertakers at Wallace.
