Smith - John Samuel
Source: Waveland Independent newspaper, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana, July 9, 1915
John Samuel Smith, better known as "Sammy," d. very suddenly on Wed. morning. He was working for Thomson & Britton, road contractors, about 4 Mi. e. of Terre Haute. He had been in fair health until the evening before. He went to the breakfast table and while drinking a cup of coffee, fell forward, dead. The body was brought here in the evening and interred in Maple Ridge Cemetery after funeral services at the ME Church in charge of Rev. WB Collier, at two on yesterday afternoon.
following obituary was read: John Samuel, son of Chancy and Sydney Smith, was born in Hendricks Co this state, Jan 29, 1854 and departed this earthly pilgrimage July 7, aged 61 years 5 mo. and 8 days. In Hendricks County, he grew to manhood with much of the common place experience that comes to rural young men. At the age of 25 in June 187y9, he was married to Miss Sarah THOMPSON, and to them were given 6 children: all of whom the angels kissed away to heaven while in the innocence of babyhood. Shortly after Mr. Smith's marriage, he and his wife came to Waveland to live, where they spent their remaining years. On the 29th day of last October the wife and companion died. Since then Mr. Smith has been lonely but cheerful. He was a faithful attendant of the ME Sunday school and Church where for many years he was a member. He was a sympathetic man always ready in times of sickness and sorrow to help anyone; a good neighbor, a good man. The end came with scarce a moment's warning, but we feel that it is well with his soul. His testimony assured us that he was right with God. He leaves to mourn his going, two brothers, one sister and a host of friends. -- transcribed and donated by Karen Bazzani Zach, a Wavelandite :)
