Source: Crawfordsville Review, Thursday Jan 27, 1916

As the words were on his lips, "Boys, I am going to work tomorrow," George W. Smith fell dead in the Wilhite Cigar store on South Green Street yesterday afternoon. Mr. Smith was known to his many friends in the city as "Farmer." Yesterday afternoon he was feeling in good health and was preparing to go to work today for WC Carr & Sons, Contractors. Mr. Smith was a carpenter by trade but has not been working for the last month because one joint of a finger on his right hand was cut off by a saw while working on the high school addition last month. He has made his home with his niece, Mrs. Otis Faust, 1109 E. Main Street. Yesterday he ate a hearty noon meal and had prepared to visit another niece, Mrs. Noble Dean, E. College street yesterday evening. Shortly before his death he had been going over some proposed work with Ivy Carr & had arranged to start in on the job this morning. Mr. Carr said that the injury to the finger had practially healed and Mr. Smith was to go to work as an overseer About 4:30 he visited the WIlhite store, a place where he spent many of his leisure hours. He was talking to several of the men in the store and inspected some papers. He then walked to a show case and leaning on it announced his intention of going to work. It came as a great shock to the men in the store when he fell over. They rushed to him but he was already dead. Heart failure being the cause. The body was taken to the funeral home of Hunt & Murphy and was removed to the Faust home on E. Main Street last night. Mr. Smith has been a resident of the city 12 years. He was born and reared south of Mace and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith. During the Spanish-American War he enlisted an dserved 3 years in the Philippines. When he first came to this city he was a bridge capenter for the Big Four RR. For about 10 years he has been employed by WC Carr as one of the most trusted and efficient men. Mr. Smith never married. He is survived by 4 nieces: Mrs. Faust; Mrs. Dean; Miss Opal and Dora Beck, both of Mace. he had no other close relatives. The deceased was a member of the Eagles and Carpenter' s Union.
