Elias Smith, one of the old residents of Brown, died at his home near Dowden school house, Monday. His wife died several years ago. For some time he lived with his sons in Crawfordsville but the call of the farm was too strong for him and the last year of his life was spent on the old homestead. Funeral services were held on Wednesday. Interment at Indian Creek Cemetery. He was a brother of the late Peter K. Smith, of this place. -- transcribed and submitted by Karen Bazzani Zach

Elias Smith, aged 78, and one of the respected and long time residents of the Dowden school neighborhood, died at his residence west of that place Monday evening at 6 o’clock of hardening of the arteries. Mr Smith was born and reared, and lived practically all his life in the neighborhood where he died. For a few years he resided in this city, living on east Jefferson street. He later removed to the farm and resided with his sons, John and James. Mr. Smith’s wife died 7 years ago. Besides the sons with whom he lived he is also survived by three other sons, Charles, Alfred and Walter. The funeral service will be held at the late home Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock. Burial will be at Indiana Hill cemetery.
