Alfred Smith, 58, resident of this community throughout his
life, died at his home near here Friday morning at 4:15 o'clock.
Death was due to heart trouble from which the deceased had been
suffering for the past two years. He had been seriously ill for
two weeks. Mr. Smith was born on a farm six miles west of New
Market, on March 10, 1873. He was the son of Elias and Rachel Ann
Smith. His marriage to Minttie Allen took place Oct 6, 1897. The
deceased was a member of the Freedom Baptist Church and of the
Odd Fellows lodge at New Market. Mr. Smith was one of the best
known men in this community. He was highly industrious and was
regarded as a good and kind neighbor. He had a host of friends.
The survivors are the widow; a son, Leroy, at home; two brothers,
James of Crawfordsville, and Walter of Browns valley; a niece,
Mrs. Hazel Pickett of Urbana Ill; three nephews and one great
nephew. The funeral services were held Sunday morning at 10:30
o'clock at Freedom. Rev. Edrington of New Market was in charge.
Burial in the Freedom Cemetery. Those who preceded Mr. Smith in
death included the parents; four brothers, John, Walter, Charles
