Wallace – A farm accident claimed the life of an elderly Fountain County man Saturday afternoon. Dead is Bert Simpson, 71, of Rt. 1, Hillsboro. A news release issued by the Fountain County Sheriff’s Department said Mr. Simpson died of an apparent broken neck when he was pinned beneath a fence post and the scoop on the front of a tractor. The tractor, parked on a hill behind Mr. Simpson, apparently was left in neutral and rolled down the hill, pinning Mr. Simpson. He was found at 3 p.m. by his wife, Lois. Fountain County Coroner Robert Maus, Deputy Ed Wurtsbaugh and State Trooper Rick Wright investigated the accident. A retired farmer, Mr. Simpson was a 50-year member of Browns Valley Christian Church. He was graduated from Waveland High School in 1927 and attended Fort Wayne Business College. He was born Dec. 19, 1909, near Mace, a son of Roy and Grace Peters Simpson. He married Lois Starns of Wallace in 1930. Also surviving are a son, James R. of Crawfordsville; two daughters, Mrs. Dwight (Jeanette) Snyder of Hillsboro and Mrs. Ray (Jane) Revie of Springfield, Mo; six brothers, Lowell, Charles and Donald, all of Waveland, Forrest of Russellville, Gerald of Ladoga and Austin of New Market; a sister, Mrs. Doris Jeffries of Waveland; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A sister is deceased. Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Thomas Funeral Home at Waynetown with Rev. Mark Miller officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. A Fountain County farmer died Saturday afternoon, April 25, from injuries he received in a farm accident.
Bert Simpson, 71, RR 1, Hillsboro, sustained a broken neck after he was pinned beneath a fence post and the scoop on the front of the tractor. It is believed that the tractor had been parked on a hill behind Simpson with the gear in neutral and apparently rolled down the hill pinning the victim. His body was found around 3 p.m. by his wife.
Simpson was a 50-year member of Browns Valley Christian Church. He was graduated from Waveland High School in 1927 and attended Fort Wayne Business College.
He was born December 19, 1909, near Mace, a son of Roy and Grace Peters Simpson. He married Lois Starns of Wallace in 1930, who survives.
