Miss Nellie A. Simmons, 70, 1015 E. Main St., teacher, librarian and nurse, died at 3:45 a.m. Monday at the Protestant Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where she had been a patient for the last three weeks. She had been in poor health for the last two years. Born Feb. 26, 1894, in Blooming Grove, Ind., Miss Simmons was the daughter of Elkanah and Mary Virginia Craig Simmons. Her family moved to Crawfordsville when she was four years old. Miss Simmons was a graduate of Crawfordsville High School. She obtained her teaching degree from Evansville College. She later attended Columbia College and received her master's degree at George Peabody College at Nashville, Tenn. She then taught school in Montgomery County for a time. Miss Simmons attended college in Moores Hill, Ind., near Cincinnati, Ohio, and received a B.A. degree as a librarian there. She organized the Darlington Library and became the librarian there. After her teaching and library work, Miss Simmons entered nurses training and graduated from the West Chester County Hospital school of nursing in Valhalla, N.Y. She then worked at the hospital for three years. Miss Simmons did missionary work for the Methodist Church at Olive Hill, Ky., for several years. She worked for the Evansville Deaconess Hospital for 10 years prior to her illness. She taught public health nurses there and also did library work. She was a member of the Crawfordsville First Methodist Church, the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nurses and the American Library Association. She was a former member of the American Association of University Women. Survivors include several second cousins, Mrs. Otto Hite of Rt. 7; Mrs. Glenn Nelson of Rt. 5; Mrs. Rossie Otterman, Crawfordsville; Ralph Whalen, Crawfordsville, and L. V. Beck of near Mace. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bright Funeral Home in Crawfordsville. Rev. Ralph Moore Jones, pastor of the Crawfordsville First Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
