Lewis G. Simmons of Hammond, age 69, died Saturday morning, September 25, in Munster Community Hospital. He was born in Covington, April 17, 1913, the son of Ray and Elva Zackmire Simmons. December 16, 1944 he married Lorraine Yerkes, who survives. A 1931 graduate of Covington High School, he lived in Hammond many years but continued to spend weekends at his farm home in Covington. Simmons was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Griffith, East Chicago Masonic Lodge, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Hammond. He was a Navy Seabee in World War II and had been employed with Sinclair and Atlantic Richfield refineries. Also surviving are his mother, Elva Shultz of Covington; daughter, Linda McKie of Hammond; a sister, Maxine Flora of Covington; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with Bishop David W. Hardesty officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery at Covington. – jlr
