Roy D. Shields, 77, of 202 Dunn Ave., an auto mechanic who retired from R.M. Horner Co. in 1962, died at 11:40 a.m. Saturday in Culver Hospital. He was a charter member and past commander of both the VFW and World War I Barracks here. He also was a member of the First Christian Church. He served with the Marines in World War I. Born north of Crawfordsville on May 25, 1897, he was a son of George and Clara Hole Shields. He was married on Feb. 15, 1920, to Hallie Keller. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Betty) Maze of Rt. 3, Lebanon and Miss Dorthy Ann Shields of Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, Lee J. Shields of Crawfordsville, and two grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Powers Funeral Home here with the Rev. Howard Miller officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Crawfordsville VFW Post with the World War I Barracks serving as honor guard. Friends may call at the funeral home.   ---typed by Walt W
