Lee J. Shields, 79, of 1301 Sloan St., was pronounced dead on arrival at Culver Hospital at 2:30 a.m. today after suffering a heart attack. He authored a bi-weekly column, My Garden and I, for The Journal-Review. He had been a mechanic and machinist for R. R. Donnelley & Sons Co. and had been superintendent of Parks and Municipal Golf Course here, retiring in 1963. Mr. Shields, an avid gardener, was a free-lance writer for horticultural magazines. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a charter member of the American Legion and Crawfordsville Barracks 1567 of Veterans of WW I. Mr. Shields was one of the oldest members of the First Baptist Church, where he had served in various capacities including deacon for 20 years. Born Jan 24, 1895, in Coal Creek Township, he was a son of George W. and Clara Hole Shields. He was married to Blanche Purcell on Sept. 1, 1923. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Yvonne) Whittington of Madison, Wis.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Phyllis Shields of DeKalb, Ill., and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Philip L., who died in 1966, and a brother, Roy. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Dorman Winger officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday. – jlr
