Shields, George W.

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 27 April 1900

George W. Shields was born in Owen County, Ind., on Jan. 24, 1849, and departed this life on the evening of April 21, 1900, aged 51 years, 2 months and 25 days. His father, James Shields, died about 3 years ago near Cloverdale, Putnam County, Ind., where a brother, Henry Shields, still lives. The mother, one brother, and a sister all died of that dread disease, consumption, of which George also fell a victim. Two cousins, Joseph and William, of Coatsville, Ind., visited him while sick. With this exception he had seen none of his own people for several years. He was married on Oct. 1, 1893, to Mrs. Clara King, formerly Miss Clara Hole. To this union were born two sons, Lee J. and Roy D., aged five and six respectively. Three stepchildren survive, two boys, Russell and Jesse, and one girl, May, all nearly grown. They are industrious and can be much comfort and assistance to their mother in her afflictions.  George was a hard working, quiet man, perfectly honest in all of his dealings, and was highly respected by all who knew him. His last illness was of more than two months’ duration, and he endured his sufferings with remarkable resignation although he had no hope of recovery from the first. He was a good neighbor and will be missed in the community. The widow has the most sincere sympathy of all in her sad bereavement. -s
