Shepherd - Thomas - CW

Thomas C. Shepherd, a veteran of the Civil War, died at the
Marion Soldiers Home Wednesday afternoon June 4. Mr. Shepherd had been ill for
a long time and a complication of the infirmities of age was given as the cause
of his death. Mr. Shepherd was born at
the old Shepherd home north of New Richmond, just over the line in Tippecanoe
County. He remained on the farm until
the call to arms at the beginning of the Civil War when he enlisted in Co E of
the 72nd Indiana Regiment and served through the war. After the war,
mr. Shepherd returned to the farm. About
20 years ago he moved his family to Crawfordsville. He is survived by his
widow, three daughtesr, Mrs. Tom Kerr of Watonga, Ok; Miss Nancy Shepherd of
Three Forks, Montana; Mrs. Bennett B. Engle of Crawfordsville and one son, John
Shepherd of Vancourver, British Columbia. One daughter, Mrs. Edwin Kirkpatrick
preceded him in death about 4 years ago. Four brothers survive him, James and
Hale J. Shepherd of New Richmond; AE Shepherd of Nevada, Mo and Newton Shepherd
of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Two
brothers preceded him, Frank Shepherd about two years ago and Edwin Shepherd
who died in Idaho less than a year ago. The body of Mr. Shepherd was taken form
Marion to the home of his daughter, Mrs. BB Engle in Crawfordsville. There the
funeral occurred at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. WH Fertich
pastor of Trinity ME Church. McPherson Post GAR also gave their ritualistic
service. The pallbearers were: Ambrose Remley, MVB Smith, AR Doyle and Alfred
Laughlin all members of Co E in which Mr. Shepherd served through the war,
Lemuel McClamrock of Co G and Smauel Fraley of Co H also of the 72nd
Indiana. The interment was made in Sugar Grove cemetery the pallbearers at the
grave being Charles and Win Shepherd, Bennett Engle, Ed Kirkpatrick, John
Patton and Clayton Butler all relatives of the deceased.
